25 Years of Crafting!
This year marks the 25th season of fundraising by the crafters at Stonehenge
Works in support of the railway.
The idea began in early 2001 to provide a visitor facility for passengers
while their train's engine was run around for the return journey. A building
from Arnold Sands Double Arches quarry—once used as a dispatch manager’s
office—was donated for free and relocated to serve as a craft shop.
Led by Maggie Evans, it opened at the start of the 2001 season.
Unlike modern Portakabins, the shop has a timber framework and was likely
built in the early days of Portakabin production. Though not intended
to last so long, the many hundreds of hours from crafters of dedication
and maintenance has kept it going.
Over the years, 75 crafters have contributed, with three original members
still active today. They've raised over £54,000 for the railway,
while the total turnover has been just over £209,000. Much has changed
since 2001, but the quality and uniqueness of the handmade crafts remains
the same. So come and say hello to the staff at the craft shop, and join
in their silver anniversary celebrations!
Some of the crafters are attending the Linsdale Canal
Festival on Saturday 26th July between 11am and 5pm. Everyone is invited!

had to be moved to its present location and the siding was shortened to
